Acupressure

No matter if it hurts somewhere, itches or feels numb, we touch, rub or press these points of our body quite instinctively. In TCM, this became a therapy: Acupressure uses — just like acupuncture — an empirical knowledge of points and pathways (so-called meridians) and their medical effect that has grown over thousands of years.

How does acupressure work?

According to traditional Chinese medicine, “Qi” flows through our body. Qi is the Chinese expression for function and life force. If this flow of Qi in the body is blocked, complaints and diseases arise. By massaging certain points, these blockages can be removed.

In contrast to acupuncture, these points are not stimulated by needles, but by pressure of the fingers or the hand. This pressing and massaging of the acupressure points sets impulses and stimuli of healing in the body. The Qi flows again and the natural functions of our body resume.

Acupressure has few side effects and is excellent for self-application, whether in support of a therapy or for quick self-help in acute cases.

Can you do acupressure yourself?

Numerous doctors and therapists confirm: you can safely perform acupressure yourself. You only have to press and massage the respective acupressure points. If you do not hit the corresponding point exactly, you will feel it. But with acupressure it is often enough if the corresponding stimulus point is already activated by the pressure of the massage. Thus, a beneficial effect can be achieved through the massage. The life energy Qi can flow again without blockages. Thus, through acupressure self-treatment, you can massage away physical ailments yourself and relieve discomfort.

When not to use acupressure

Acupressure has very few side effects. Nevertheless, there are some contraindications, that is, situations in which acupressure should not be used or should be used only in consultation with your medical or naturopathic therapist:

  • Severe psychological or psychiatric illnesses
  • Extreme physical or psychological weakness and exhaustion
  • In pregnancy, especially in cases of cervical insufficiency and placental complications
  • Severe disease of the cardiovascular system.
  • Disease-related changes in the area of the corresponding acupressure points

In rare cases, acupressure may cause skin irritation, bruising or localized discomfort. In any case, stop the treatment and seek therapeutic advice.

Which acupressure points are there?

There are a total of 361 acupuncture points. These are located on the corresponding pathways, also called meridians. Almost all acupuncture points lying on the skin can be acupressured.

How do I find the right acupressure points?

To make it easier for you to find the appropriate acupressure, we have described the respective points and their location in detail for the following complaints and symptoms and shown them in the picture.

Acupressure points are then usually massaged by applying vertical and moderate pressure while moving the finger in a slight circular motion. The intensity of pressure should depend on the personal feeling and should always be pleasant. The duration and frequency of acupressure depend on the localization of the point and the type of complaint and are indicated there.
